AIR TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Air safety is a way of life to those involved in the industry. But the high consequence nature of aviation and air traffic control extends right back through the design process.

Ben Leonard, Director at User Centric Design:
“Air Traffic Management has exacting demands due to its reliance on complex and dispersed IT systems. But we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Our approach is tuned to the specific needs of the project. We assess the consequences of change on the organisation and its existing systems. We help to identify potential human error paths and resolve them through interface design, procedures and training.”

At User Centric Design, our work in this sector is safety centred. The need to support the operator is all pervasive and we are fully engaged with this ethos too. To us, the Air Traffic Controller (ATCO) is key. User Centric Design consultants have the skills and experience to make a difference.

“We are particularly proud that our consultants were involved in the development of control rooms and towers at Stansted and Swanwick. Our method is to adopt a systems engineering approach as we develop the user requirements, and the concept designs for the latest tools and software. As an example, we have validated systems and procedures using high fidelity simulators, then documented the resulting human performance improvements built on robust evidence.”

Past projects for our consultants include:

  • Assessment of Terminal Control electronic flight strips (Customer: Indra)

  • Ergonomic assessment of the workstation layouts in Stansted Tower and the introduction of Electronic Flight Paper Strips

  • Development of precursor software tools to Time Base Spacing in order to optimise runway use through Flexible and Dynamic use of Wake Turbulence Separations

  • Design, test and evaluation of a Planned Spacing Tool to facilitate the move to time-based spacing which went live at Heathrow in 2018

  • The redesign of the Terminal Control room when TC moved from West Drayton to Swanwick

  • Safety HAZOP workshops for a voice communication system

  • Global Navigation Satellite System simulation studies to address ATCO Workload, Situational Awareness and Team working (Customer: Eurocontrol)
