User Centric Design Ltd is currently seeking experienced and motivated safety professionals to join our new nuclear safety division. This is a very exciting time at User Centric Design Ltd where we already have an industry recognised Head of Nuclear Safety in place and now need to build a safety case consultancy team to support new emergent opportunities, growth and delivery. We are looking for both Senior (or heading towards Senior) and Principal level experienced safety case professionals who are fundamentally good team players and want to belong within a company which supports their growth aspirations with tailored guidance and mentoring support.

The Role
The role is to deliver safety case assurance within the nuclear domain. The successful candidates will likely already be (or eligible for) a Senior or Principal Grade. They will have the close support of the UCD Directors and the Head of Nuclear Safety who will guide and mentor their technical and consultancy development whilst providing a range of opportunities to build their professional relationships and reputation with our clients.
As a safety professional, you will be responsible for delivering a varied number of safety case reports to our clients that meet expectations for time, budget and quality. You will also be expected to regularly interact with clients, providing progress updates, raising challenges alongside potential solutions and for managing risks / opportunities. You should expect to be working closely with the Head of Nuclear Safety who will be supporting your continuing development with the eventual aim of you becoming a key safety case lead representing UCD for assigned clients. The level of guidance and support will be tailored based on your existing experience, and will be tracked within a personal development plan which best aligns with your own growth ambitions.
With sufficient experience and development we would eventually be looking for you to support the training and mentoring of other team members as they join UCD with the overall goal of creating a new inclusive safety case community of industry leading consultants.
Based on level of existing experience, we will be able to offer you training, technical mentoring and guidance in the following activities as part of your overall career development:
Safety Case writing and presentation skills which support ease of readability and provide clear confidence in the assessment process.
Optioneering reviews including the application of scoring and weighting tables in order to derive the preferred design solution.
Hazard Identification (HAZID) activities including secretary and chair support to Hazard Operability (HAZOP) studies in addition to other forms of HAZID.
Hazard Analysis Techniques (HAZANs) including Design Basis Analysis (DBA), Probabilistic Safety Assessment (PSA), Safety Measure determination and risk derivation.
Hazard Schedule and Fault Schedule development.
Engineering and Procedure Schedule development.
Shortfall Sentencing, including ALARP Optioneering studies.
Derivation of Claims, Arguments and Evidence.
What We Are Looking For From You
We understand that Safety Case deliverables are varied between clients and that candidates reflect this in their own experience and background. This is why we have flexibility to train and grow experience where required. However, to do so, we would be looking for the following desirable characteristics which would help to be receptive towards this approach:
Be fully comfortable with using Microsoft packages of Excel and Word.
Have an appreciation for providing clear written statements which can describe complex systems in clear understandable language for the target audience.
Have an interest and ability to search through large volumes of data and reports and filter out relevant information.
Have of a good work ethic and self-drive with a strong sense of personal pride in the work being delivered.
Be comfortable communicating with other technical disciplines and with representatives of the client organisation.
Have a willingness to travel to client sites across the UK to support meetings and other related project activities when required.
All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
In addition, the following level of experience is sought for the role of Senior and Principal roles
Senior Safety Case
Degree in a science or engineering based subject or vocational qualification (HND or equivalent) and/or extensive practical experience
Have at least 3 years’ experience in supporting / delivering Nuclear Safety Case.
Authoring safety case assessments / reports / documentation in alignment with client standards and procedures.
Providing technical input to the design and offering guidance and support to other technical disciplines.
Supporting document verification and checking activities.
Awareness of some of the techniques used for Safety Case Assessment. Examples include (but are not exclusive or limited to) HAZID, HAZAN, calculations on dose assessment, fault sequence frequency, risk derivation, optioneering and shortfall sentencing.
Principal Safety Case
In addition to the items identified against the Senior role, the following additional items are recognised for the role of Principal:
Experience and confidence in delivering safety cases or the constituent reports which make up a safety case.
Have experience of leading safety case teams to the successful delivery of a project.
Have provided technical support, mentoring or training to less experienced members of the team.
Supported project planning in terms of identifying the necessary safety case tasks required to deliver a programme of work and the identification of budgets and durations for completing these tasks.
Have been previously responsible for reporting on progress in terms of time, cost and delivery to a Project Manager or Client representative.
Ability to manage change when unforeseen issues emerge or following challenges to the agreed scope of works.
Ability and confidence to lead or chair meetings with client representatives being present.

Senior Safety Case Salary – Up to £70,000 per annum plus individual / business performance related bonus (dependant on skills and level of experience)
Principal Safety Case Salary – Up to £85,000 per annum plus individual / business performance related bonus (dependant on skills and level of experience)
